SARIKEI: A search and rescue (SAR) operation has been mounted for a teenager who fell from a fishing boat and into the Rajang River.

The 17-year-old victim is believed to have been sleeping on the roof of the vessel prior to the incident near the WTK Kinyau factory here on Tuesday night.

“On the day of the incident, at around 7pm, the crew took a break after unloading the drift nets. They decided to sleep early before the next fishing trip.

“At around 12 midnight, one of them, sleeping in the back of the boat, woke up to find that his colleague (the victim) was missing,” said the Fire and Rescue Department operations centre today.

The rest of the crew then sought help from another fishing boat anchored nearby to search for the victim.

“A few hours later, they found the victim’s blanket on the surface of the water, indicating that the victim could have fallen into the water.”
