SIBU: A man from Myanmar is feared to have drowned after he was swept away by strong currents in the Rajang River last Friday.

The man identified as Si Thu Htun, 21, was feared to have drowned while taking a bath after a haircut.

According to the State Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) operation centre, it received a call from the Sibu police headquarters on the incident at 1.30pm on Friday.

Authorities have mounted a search and rescue operation to find the missing man.

Si had jumped into the river with a colleague from a barge in front of the factory at around 12.40pm that day.

A search and rescue operation (SAR) was immediately mounted after the authorities were informed of the incident.

The SAR operation resumed at 8.15am on the second day of the operation, with Bomba doing a 2-km radius search.
