KOTA SAMARAHAN: Search and rescue (SAR) personnel yesterday recovered part of a body believed to be that of a fisherman who was reportedly attacked by a crocodile in Kampung Meranek river last Tuesday.
The Fire and Rescue Department operations centre said the SAR team found a human thigh at 12.05 pm at the Samarahan River estuary.
It said the body part was found 15km away from the SAR control post and 7.5 km away from the location of the crocodile attack.
“The SAR operation at Kampung Meranek was terminated at 1.45pm after the victim’s family decided to believe that the body part belonged to their missing son,” it said in a statement today (Jan 14).
The search operations had been conducted over the past three days.
On Tuesday, the victim, identified as Azyan Azhar, 28, was said to have gone to the river with his father to pull their shrimp nets at 3.45am.
Shortly after, a crocodile jumped out of the river and attacked the victim.
His father, who witnessed the incident, immediately returned home to Kampung Meranek to inform family members of the attack and that his son had vanished into the river.
