KUCHING: The Sarawak Agrotechnology Park Complex (SARTECH) in Semenggok is set to be a key driver of agricultural transformation in Sarawak, focusing on research, development and the application of modern technologies.
Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom said the complex will integrate various initiatives and serve as a hub for agricultural innovation.
He highlighted that the project aligns with the state’s aspiration to become a net food exporter by 2030.
“We propose a large complex in Semenggok to house agricultural research and product centres.
“It will encompass facilities for inspections, laboratories and even hospitals,” he said during his speech at the Sarawak Agriculture Department’s 100th anniversary dinner here, Monday night (Nov 25).
Dr Rundi also revealed that discussions have been held with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) to establish a veterinary school at the complex, a proposal that has already received approval from UPM’s Senate.
“We have 10 hectares of land available to utilise. With this, I am confident that Sarawak’s innovative ideas hold the potential to be game changers for the state.”
Also present at the event were deputy premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki and Sarawak Agriculture Department director Dominic Chunggat.
