KUCHING: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said the monikers “Sarawak ASEAN Battery” and “Sarawak Green Energy Hub” are not mere rhetoric.

He said this as the state’s unwavering commitment to sustainability is clearly reflected in its comprehensive Green Economy Initiatives.

“By strategically investing both in sustainable forest management and a diversified renewable energy portfolio, including hydropower, solar, biomass, biofuel, and hydrogen, we are building a resilient and low-carbon future as a leader in environmental stewardship.

“We have the necessary resources and are actively working towards realising these visions,” he said.

He said this in his speech, representing Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during the opening ceremony of the Asia Pacific Regional Conference on Forest Landscape Restoration 2024 at Riverside hotel here today (Aug 27).

On another note, Awang Tengah then stated that Sarawak has emerged as a leader in tree planting through its Greening Sarawak Campaign.

“We set our own more aggressive goal to plant 35 million trees by 2025. I am proud to share that Sarawak achieved this goal one year earlier, this year.

“This achievement is a testament to our commitment to environmental stewardship, as well as the successful partnerships among the government, non-governmental organisation (NGO) and private sector.

“The achievement underscores Sarawak’s pivotal role in Malaysia’s broader green initiatives,” he added.

Also present during the opening ceremony were Deputy Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh, Forest Department of Sarawak (FDS) director Datuk Hamden Mohammad and other distinguished guests.
