KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that incentives for Sarawak athletes competing in the upcoming 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma) will be determined based on their overall performance.
While incentives are assured, the final amount will be decided by Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED) Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
“We do have incentives in place, but the final amount will be determined later based on their performance,” Abang Johari told the media after officiating the ‘Our Star, Our Pride’ – 100 Days Countdown ceremony before the 21st Sarawak Sukma 2024, held at Pullman Hotel here on Thursday (May 9).
Responding to queries about specific allocations for winners, he pointed out that such rewards would be contingent upon the athletes’ performance.
“We will assess their performance. Offering rewards without achievements doesn’t hold much meaning, so we’ll evaluate their performance first before deciding.”
He also encouraged athletes to prepare diligently and leverage the advantage of competing on home turf for the upcoming Sukma.
“In the previous Sukma held in Perak, we didn’t secure victory, perhaps due to unfamiliarity with the location. However, this time, we are in Sarawak. We are familiar with places like Sibu, Miri, Serian, Bintulu; hence, we have an advantage. It’s like playing football,” he illustrated.
“With only 100 days remaining, it’s crucial to prepare thoroughly. We aspire to witness Sarawakian athletes being awarded gold medals, and we look forward to seeing our flags flying high.”
The ceremony also saw the presence of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah; Abdul Karim and his deputy Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu; and Minister for Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development, Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom.
