KUCHING: Athletes from Sarawak displayed exceptional abilities and dedication at the 12th ASEAN Para Games (APG), securing an impressive tally of 13 gold medals.
Minister of Women, Early Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, lauded the outstanding performance of the Sarawakian team and recognised their significant contribution.
In a press statement yesterday, she noted that out of the 50 gold medals won by Malaysia, Sarawak’s athletes clinching 13 gold medals.
Moreover, she highlighted the success of the cerebral palsy (CP) football team, which included two players from Sarawak, who earned a gold medal.
Fatimah commended the athletes for their record-breaking achievements, as they set seven Meet Records (MR) during the games.
“I am pleased by the accomplishment of our Sarawak gold medalists, who broke a total of seven Meet Records (MR). Muhamad Nur Saiful broke two records, Mohd Adib Iqbal broke three records, and Nicodemus Manggoi broke two records,” she said.
She added that Muhamad Nur Saiful would represent Malaysia in swimming at the World Championships in Manchester next month, with the aim of qualifying for the France Paralympics in 2024. Additionally, Nicodemus is set to participate in the 4th Asian Para Games in Hangzhou in September.
The minister also took the opportunity to commend Cambodia, the host country, for the flawless execution of various aspects, including technical arrangements, food, accommodation, and logistics, which contributed to the smooth operation of the games.
