KUCHING: Sarawak has achieved 99.2 per cent overall domestic electricity coverage and 97.9 per cent rural electricity coverage through a mixture of electrification initiatives under the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication.
According to Sarawak Energy Group chief executive officer Datuk Sharbini Suhaili, this is a significant improvement from 56 per cent rural electricity coverage in 2009.
“As part of its commitment to sustainable development, the group is also working with stakeholders on a 10-Year Tree Planting, Protection and Habitat Restoration Campaign, to plant and protect 500,000 trees by 2030 in alignment with the Greening Sarawak Campaign,” he said.
Sharbini said this after welcoming Sarawak Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Dr Hazland Abang Hipni and a delegation from the Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Sarawak (MEESty) for a working visit at Menara Sarawak Energy here.
Sharbini also shared that Sarawak Energy’s flagship event for 2023; Sustainable and Renewable Energy Forum (SAREF 3.0), will be held from Sept 6 to 7 this year at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).
“SAREF 3.0 aims to drive local discourse on sustainability and will further highlight the role of renewable energy in delivering the UN SDGs by 2030,” he said.
The delegates accompanying the Deputy Minister were the Permanent Secretary for MEESty, Abang Ahmad Abang Morni; Deputy Permanent Secretary, Rusmaliza Mat Saad; and Head of Energy Unit, Ikmal Hisham Maharom.
The working visit concluded with a presentation of an EV charger to Dr Hazland.
