KUCHING: Sarawak athletes have made a strong showing in the boccia event, securing three medals in the female singles category as the competition advances to the semi-finals.
In the female singles BC1 category (for athletes with cerebral palsy), Angeline Melissa Lawas claimed gold while Nuraisyah Madzelan secured silver.
Meanwhile, Sheirviana Matthew claimed a silver in the female singles BC3 category for athletes with severe locomotive disorders, while Jervis Chi secured a bronze for Sarawak in the male singles BC3 category.
Earlier Wednesday (Sept 25), in the female singles qualifying round, Angeline Melissa Lawas and Nuraisyah Madzelan secured victories, both defeating their opponents, Sabah’s Natalya Natasya Wilson and Labuan’s Melody General, with identical 9-1 scores.
In the male singles quarter-finals, Sarawak’s Tay Boon Seng edged out a narrow 6-5 victory over Labuan’s Carlo Jay Chai, while Dale Adelric Teri advanced to the semi-finals with a 6-1 win against Terengganu’s Mohammad Rizaili Muda.
Following his quarter-final victory over Mohammad Rizaili, Dale Aledric Teri continued his strong performance by defeating Selangor’s Muhammad Aqif Iskandar Zuljifri in the semi-finals.
Despite a 1-8 loss to Perak’s Lim Yin Xiang in the female singles BC3 category, Sheirviana Matthew still secured a silver medal for Sarawak.
Unfortunately, Jervis Chi was unable to secure a higher placement after losing to Selangor’s Vikneshwaran, while Willyien Cliff missed out on a semi-final spot following a 1-3 defeat to Terengganu’s Syed Izz Zahiruddin Syed Kamaruddin.
