KUCHING: Sarawak is calling for the national policies on taekwondo to be reviewed following the exclusion of taekwondo in this year’s Malaysia Games (SUKMA).
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this was to ensure that there is consistency that the sport would be included in every SUKMA.
“Just like football, dart, silat, it must be consistent and always be competed in SUKMA,” he said.
He said this when officiating at the closing of the Premier of Sarawak Borneo Cup International Taekwondo (WTF) Championship 2022 at the Indoor Stadium on Today (Aug 21).
Abang Johari, who is also patron of the Sarawak Taekwondo Association, stressed there must be consistent policies on sports.
“Sarawak is saddened that taekwondo has been dropped in the coming SUKMA. As you know, when an event is listed, in any organised games it has to be sustainable and to remain there because that is the only way for you to develop the sport.
“Hence, you cannot disrupt taekwondo as one of the events, otherwise it will also happen to other sport events.
“If that is the case, we can’t develop sports,” he pointed out, while adding that in the last SUKMA, taekwondo was listed as one of the events.
Nevertheless, he assured that the Sarawak government would continue to support the development of taekwondo.
