KUCHING: Sarawak has continued to advance competitively across various sectors to strengthen its economy – 61 years on since the state helped formed the Federation of Malaysia.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that Sarawak’s focus is now on fostering a sustainable economy through new resources and the digital economy.

“This approach aligns with the Post Covid Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030) which prioritises economic prosperity, social inclusion and environmental sustainability as the main foundation towards our goal to make Sarawak a developed and high-income state by 2030.

“God willing, Sarawak will continue to progress forward with its existing strengths and notable achievements. Last year, the state was recognised by the World Bank as a high-income region due to our strong income generation.

“I sincerely hope that the economic growth will continue rapidly and the harmony among Sarawak’s multiracial and multi-religious communities will endure in the future with the spirit of ‘Segulai Sejalai’, which is rooted in mutual respect,” he said in his Malaysia Day message.

Abang Johari pointed out that Malaysia Day, celebrated on Sept 16 every year, commemorates the formation of the Federation of Malaysia in 1963, through the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), where Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak, and Singapore (until its exit in 1965) agreed to the formation.

This year’s theme, ‘Malaysia Madani: Jiwa Merdeka,’ chosen for both Malaysia Day and National Day, calls upon all Malaysians to reflect on and embrace the true meaning of independence, instilling it in the identity and soul of every citizen.

“I wish a Happy Malaysia Day to all Sarawakians.

“May our unity remain strong with a high spirit of comradeship as we work together to advance Sarawak and the country, as well as nurture a Madani generation with a strong sense of identity and loyalty to the motherland,” he said.
