KUCHING: The Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS) has been awarded a grant of USD5,000 (MYR21,525.33) from the The Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) Foundation, which will be used to fund the SCCS Survivors Youth Camp.
SCCS president Mary Kiu said the camp, an essential part of SCCS’s ongoing survivorship programme, is designed to support young cancer survivors by helping them build resilience, confidence, and emotional strength as they transition to life after cancer.
“This camp provides a safe and empowering space for young survivors, enabling them to face the challenges ahead with confidence. We deeply appreciate the MDRT Foundation’s commitment to supporting these brave youths and ensuring they have opportunities to grow beyond their cancer experiences,” she said.
The Survivors Youth Camp, held in September during the Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, brought together around 65 participants, including 34 cancer survivors from across Sarawak.
Many of the older survivors returned as volunteers to mentor the younger participants, fostering a strong sense of community and support.
Themed ‘Breakthrough: Breaking Barriers, Unleashing Potential’, the camp aimed to push participants beyond their comfort zones and encourage personal growth.
Key sessions included inspirational talks by childhood cancer survivors like Kim Loong, now a successful corporate trainer, and medical advice from Dr. Betty, head of paediatric oncology at Sarawak General Hospital.
Since 2001, SCCS has provided vital support to over 1,700 families affected by childhood cancer in Sarawak.
The organisation continues to play a pivotal role in the lives of young survivors, providing not only financial assistance and medical support but also the emotional and psychological tools needed to thrive.
