KUCHING: Civil servants in the state have been urged to uphold integrity within a culture of innovation, ensuring both elements are integrated into daily practices.

State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki said it was important to have innovation and integrity within the civil service for effective governance.

“To some, these two aspects may seem unrelated and inconsistent with each other. While innovation is often about breaking down the status quo, integrity is usually seen as staying steadfast and unwavering to our principles.

“While innovation is about challenging accepted norms and driving change, integrity is more about holding compliance and consistency. However, the two are innately linked,” he said.

He said this during the Sarawak Civil Service Innovation Convention Awards (SCSICA) 2024 Presentation Ceremony held at a hotel here last night (Oct 25).

Abu Bakar further called on civil servants to work together to ensure that the culture of innovation is being cultivated, while at the same time reinforcing the element of integrity.

“This combination is essential to fulfilling our roles in public service effectively,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sarawak Federal Secretary Datuk Ahmad Nadzri Mohd Hassan said the Sarawak Federal Secretary’s Office is fully committed to working with the state government to continuously promote innovation and creativity agenda.

“This is in line with the aim to make Sarawak a thriving region driven by data and innovation, where all will benefit from economic prosperity, social inclusivity, and a sustainable environment, as outlined in Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030,” he said.

On another note, he said the civil service requires a new paradigm to meet the public’s rising expectations and demands for quality public service.

“As everyone here is aware, the Public Service Reform Agenda is a new initiative of the Chief Secretary to the Government.

“The agenda focuses on five Reform Outcome Areas (ROAs) and is strengthened by 20 strategies to add value to public institutions as the main communication channel between the government and the people,” he said.
