KUCHING: The Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) has expressed its appreciation for the consistent support provided by the Sarawak government through annual allocations to the local agency.
DBP director-general Dr Hazami Jahari acknowledged that this financial contribution reflects Sarawak’s commitment to empowering the national language within the state.
Hazami, who served as the director of Sarawak DBP from 2014 to 2018 before assuming his current role, stressed the pivotal role of Sarawak government’s funding in carrying out various linguistic and literary activities in Sarawak.
“The funds were channelled through the Chief Minister’s office, the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Ministers, as well as other ministers and members of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly.”
He made these remarks during his visit to New Sarawak Tribune and Suara Sarawak CEO Datuk Dr Jeniri Amir at its office here on Wednesday (Nov 8).
Hazami suggested that this initiative could serve as a model for other states, citing developments in Sabah, where the Sabah government also contributes to strengthening the national language through collaboration with DBP and related agencies.
“While the funding methods may vary depending on the political situation in each state, the core principle is a shared responsibility to ensure the continued development of the national language.”
He emphasised that the empowerment of the national language is the foundation for building a strong nation, serving as a tool for understanding knowledge, unity, and cultural understanding.
“Therefore, I hope that every state government will show the same level of commitment, not only in providing moral support but also by providing financial contributions and expertise needed to advance the national language.”
