KOTA SAMARAHAN: Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata has attributed driver negligence, including speeding and disregarding traffic signals, as the primary cause of road accidents, particularly during festive seasons.

He said despite various efforts made to address the issue, there are still some road users who fail to learn from the accidents that occur.

“Typically, among the reasons for road accidents is the driver’s own negligence, such as driving at high speeds and exceeding the speed limit, cutting in without maintaining proper distance from other vehicles, and the condition of their vehicles,” he said.

He made these remarks during a media briefing for the Roadblock Visit Programme (SJR) in Kota Samarahan in conjunction with the Iftar Gathering with Frontline Personnel here yesterday (Apr 6).

In light of this, Mancha recommended that road users verify their vehicles’ good condition and upkeep before setting out on their journey back to their hometowns.

“This is because most records show that accidents occur due to the attitude of the drivers themselves besides the unpredictable weather conditions,” he said.

At the same time, he advised the public to play fireworks according to the set regulations to ensure the safety of themselves and others.

Furthermore, he said that about 700 police officers from various branches of the Sarawak Contingent will be involved in Op Selamat 22 during the Eid al-Fitr celebration in 2024 from 8th to 13th April.

“The focus of Op Selamat 22 for the Eid al-Fitr celebration in 2024 is on federal roads, state roads, and city roads especially in areas prone to accidents and traffic congestion including residential areas and densely populated areas.

“A total of 49 accident-prone locations have also been identified and patrols will be conducted during the operation.

“The operation is carried out to reduce the rate of road accidents; enforce traffic laws and regulations; create a comfortable and safe environment for users; and prevent home burglary crimes.

“We also urge the public to cooperate and inform the police when leaving their residential homes during this festive season,” he said.
