KUCHING: Sarawak DAP has congratulated former Law Minister Tan Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, who has sworn-in as the 19th President of the Dewan Negara today (June 19), replacing Tan Sri Rais Yatim.
Its chairman Chong Chieng Jen, who is also Stampin Member of Parliament (MP), welcomed the appointment, saying that the former law minister has the relevant experience and expertise for the position.
“Congratulations to him (Wan Junaidi).
“He has the experience and he is committed to parliamentary reforms,” Chong told reporters at a press conference held at DAP headquarters here.
Chong is confident that with Wan Junaidi’s appointment, the latter is able to push for more parliamentary reforms, especially the setting up of more Special Parliamentary Select Committees.
The committees, he said, will be crucial as they function as a check and balance mechanism; overseeing the ministries.
Wan Junaidi, 78, was minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) during Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s administration, and was former entrepreneur development and cooperatives minister during the Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin-led government. He is a seven-term member of parliament, serving Batang Lupar (1990-2004) and Santubong until 2022. He was also Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker from 2008 to 2013.
