KUCHING: Dayang Nurulnuhaa Fasihah Abang Misbahhuddin shattered an eight-year gold medal drought for Sarawak in petanque at the 2024 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in the women’s shooting event today (Sunday).
The 17-year-old faced a fierce challenge from Federal Territories’ Nur Arissa Qasreena Ratinan, with both players neck-and-neck in the first two disciplines at the Santubong Petanque Arena.
However, Dayang Nurulnuhaa’s precision in the third and fifth disciplines got her over the line, and the win, with a close score of 29-27, delivering Sarawak’s first gold in petanque since 2016.
Nur Arissa Qareena secured the silver medal while bronze went to Johor’s Norissyakila Mohamed Sani who defeated Sarawak’s Fatin Raifana Abdul Rahman with a score of 29-6.
Sarawak’s victory was even more meaningful as the first medal in this event was presented by the Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, who is also the Member of Parliament for Santubong, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.
Also present to show support at the match was the State assemblymanfor Daro and ACDM Petanque SUKMA Sarawak 2024, Safiee Ahmad.
