KUCHING: Sarawak Energy has expanded its corporate fleet with eight new electric vehicles (EVs).

At a recent handover ceremony, Sarawak Energy’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Sharbini Suhaili, emphasised the company’s dedication to integrating sustainable practices into its operations.

“The addition of these new EVs reflects our commitment to ‘green the grid and electrify the fleet,'” he said in a statement.

“It helps reduce our carbon footprint while paving the way for broader EV adoption across Sarawak.”

This initiative is in line with Sarawak’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030) and Malaysia’s Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint 2021-2030, both of which encourage wider adoption of electric vehicles.

Dealer Principal of Regas EV Auto Sdn Bhd, Brandon Juan, hands over the new electric vehicles (EVs) to Sharbini (centre).

Sarawak Energy has been a pioneer in electric mobility in the region, having first acquired four Nissan Leaf EVs in 2015. The company has since introduced electric scooters and, in 2019, added two hydrogen-powered Hyundai Nexo SUVs to its fleet, making Sarawak the first region in Southeast Asia to deploy hydrogen-powered vehicles.

To further support EV adoption, Sarawak Energy is collaborating with the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication (MUT) and other stakeholders to develop a comprehensive EV charging network across the state.

In partnership with Gentari, the company launched Borneo’s fastest public EV charging station at ICOM Square during the Sustainability and Renewable Energy Forum 3.0 (SAREF 3.0) in Sept last year.

Equipped with 180kW DC fast chargers, this station is a crucial addition to Sarawak’s EV infrastructure.
