KUCHING: With the Sarawak government following the relaxation of Covid-19 standard operating procedures effective May 1, Sarawak is expected to see an influx of visitors.

Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said this was also due to the increase in flight frequency to Sarawak.

“On April 11, the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) decided to increase the incoming flights to Sarawak from 576 to 619 weekly, including international and domestic.

“Kuching receives the most with 328 flights per week, followed by Miri with 137, Sibu (87), Bintulu (59), Limbang, Lawas and Mulu with a total of 14 flights weekly,” he said at a press conference after welcoming AirAsia’s inaugural flight from Singapore to Miri at Miri Airport on Friday (April 29).

“For domestic flights, there are 362 weekly connecting the state’s major cities and towns, with flights mostly operated by MASwings (242 flights), AirAisa Berhad (117) and Malaysia Airlines (three).

“Miri receives the highest connectivity with 211 flights, followed by Kuching (158), Sibu (74), Bintulu (51), Limbang (33), and the rest to other smaller towns with STOLPorts such as Lawas, Marudi, Mukah, Mulu, Bario, Ba’Kelalan, Long Lellang, Long Akah, Long Seridan and Long Banga.”

On the AirAsia Singapore-Miri flight, Lee said it would be four times weekly – every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

“Besides AirAsia, we also have flights from Scoot Airline from Singapore to Miri two times weekly and also to Kuching five times weekly.

“This will give business travellers and tourists more options, and at the same time, they can enjoy more competitive air fares.”

Also present at the press conference was Pujut assemblyman and Miri mayor Adam Yii.
