KUCHING: The Sarawak government is studying mineral mining practices and legislation in Canada to explore the potential for graphite production from biomass.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said a delegation led by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan recently visited the country to study these matters.
“Canada is a global leader in mineral management and exploration practices that are environmentally friendly. They rehabilitate mining areas afterward,” he told reporters after officiating at the Sarawak Premier’s Department ‘Ibadah Qurban’ ceremony held at Wisma Sabati here today (June 18).
He said the delegation’s findings would complement studies conducted by the Sarawak Department of Minerals and Geosciences on identified minerals, aimed at avoiding over-exploitation.
“I will examine their report because we have the potential to extract graphite. Biomass in Sarawak possesses qualities that can yield graphite, a chemical essential for hydrogen fuel cells,” he said.
The Premier asserted that the mining industry holds significant potential with a promising opportunity for graphite production. In view of this, a comprehensive study on mining exploration and management was required.
“As I mentioned, we have biomass and it has certain characteristics that allow us to produce graphite.
“Graphite is a chemical substance needed in fuel cells and hydrogen production. For example, if we have this, there is potential for revenue aside from the scientific perspective,” he said.
He noted that the value of the minerals available in the state was estimated at RM1.25 trillion.
