THE rate of graduate employability in Sarawak is better than the national rate of employability. Education, Science and Technological Research Assistant Minister Dr Annuar Rapaee (GPS-Nangka) said this in response to Razaili Gapor (GPS-Beting Maro) who enquired whether TVET programmes would be implemented in his constituency.
“The employability rate for TVET is 80 percent whereas for universities, the figure depends on the university. Curtin Sarawak has 90 percent, Swinburne Sarawak is doing well at 95 percent while Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) is at 83 percent,” he said.
Dr Annuar revealed that the figures in the state is better than the national figure which was recently lamented by Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik.
“Whereas in Sarawak, our students are performing well,” he said.
Annuar also maintained that the state government realised the importance of TVET and would continue to make students and parents aware of it.
“TVET is not second class qualification. The Education, Science and Technological Research Ministry (MESTR) has provided funds for programmes such as SCAT fair, WorldSkills Malaysia Sarawak and SIIDEX,” he said.
He also added that the drop in enrolment of science stream students which occurred in the 2004-2018 period has stopped.
“The percentage has increased from 29 percent last year to 30 percent this year,” he said.
