KUCHING: The Sarawak government is actively grooming more vendors to support the state’s oil and gas company, Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS).
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this effort is part of the initiative to empower the local economy and provide more opportunities for the people of Sarawak.
However, he said, as PETROS has only been operating for five years, it is still in the process of strengthening its operations.
“While we wait for PETROS to run and study what is needed, we still have Petronas, our partner, which has many skilled vendors under them.
“With that many vendors, there will be more sustenance for the people,” he said when officiating at the Sarawak Vendor in the Oil and Gas Services and Equipment (OGSE) industry appreciation ceremony at Hilton Hotel here today.
Abang Johari congratulated the 47 selected vendors who have secured contracts and purchase orders from Petronas and petroleum arrangement contractors (PACs) between Nov 2023 to Apr 2024.
“I take this opportunity to congratulate all of you. This industry is indeed very dynamic and full of challenges. Therefore, you need to create skills and ideas to participate in O&G,” he said.
He also expressed his appreciation to Petronas for its contribution in developing and nurturing local talents so that they could be active in various sectors related to O&G.
