KUCHING: Advanced port infrastructure in Tanjung Bako and Tanjung Manis gives Sarawak an edge to becoming a leader in the country’s fishing industry.
Additionally, the size of the state, expanse of the sea and fish resources within it are also advantageous to the state.
Malaysian Fisheries Development Board (LKIM) chairman Muhammad Faiz Fadzil who spelt these out said they therefore aim to increase fish landings in Sarawak.
“Sarawak is ranked sixth in terms of fish landing compared to us (peninsula),” he said at the inauguration of the Satang Biru Regional Fishermen’s Association (PNK) fish pond in Kampung Telaga Air here, yesterday.
“Therefore, we want to encourage more fishermen in the state to be active, at the same time play a role in revitalising the fisheries ecosystem involving noth the upstream and downstream sectors.” He added that Sarawak also has strength in terms of human resources with 19 PNK – the most in Malaysia.
“Therefore, we want each PNK to play their respective roles in developing their economic projects under the agenda of 1 Product 1 PNK (1P1P) so that the effort to develop and advance the fishing association can be achieved,” he explained.
According to a media release issued by LKIM, the fish pond project is an effort by PNK Satang Biru to enhance the association’s economy.
The fish pond, which was developed on one hectare of land, was financed through the LKIM Fishery Institution Loan Scheme (SPIN), at an estimated cost of RM400,000.
It will host various popular fish species for visitors, including GT (Belokok), Siakap (Selunsung) and Tanda Red Fish, to suit the interests of fishing enthusiasts.
The effort is seen as a step to attract more tourists, especially anglers to this location.
