LABUAN: Labuan is poised to become the focal point for football enthusiasts this weekend as it hosts the highly anticipated 2nd series of the Senior Football Championship Datuk Hassan Sani Trophy 2023.
The three-day event, set to take place at the Dataran Labuan field from Nov 10-12 will feature a total of 36 teams from Brunei, Sarawak, Sabah, and Labuan, making it a grand spectacle for football fans in the Borneo region.
The championship is organised by the Labuan Football Association (LAFA).
The tournament will see 21 teams representing Sabah, six from Labuan, five from Brunei, and four from Sarawak, all vying for the coveted Datuk Hassan Sani Trophy.
LAFA president Sophian Said said the event could be considered an inter-Borneo football championship, as it brings together teams from various parts of the Borneo Island.
“Anticipation is running high, as it’s expected that Labuan will attract around 10,000 visitors from various parts of Sabah, Sarawak, and Brunei during the championship.
“The event promises not only thrilling matches but also a vibrant and lively atmosphere as fans gather to support their favourite teams and players.
Sophian said the championship would also feature some renowned football personalities, adding an extra layer of excitement for spectators.
Among the notable players expected to grace the event are former national players Matlan Marjan and Jelius Ating, along with former Sabah players Harun Laban, Redzuan Aman Khan, Henry Saimpon, Jekrison Kilan, and Ravi Chandran.
Labuan Corporation’s chief executive officer Rithuan Ismail said the event would positively impact the island’s socio-economic landscape.
He emphasised the importance of introducing more programmes that could draw visitors to the island, subsequently leading to a beneficial ripple effect on the local economy. – BERNAMA
