Sarawak institute to conduct joint research on wetland forest education, management with Estonian university

KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Sarawak Tropical Peat Research Institute (TROPI) will collaborate with University of Tartu, Estonia on a four-year long research project.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced that the research project entitled ‘LiWeFor: Living Labs for Wetland Forests Research’ will be led by Professor Dr Ülo Mander.

“The project is a unique partnership in establishing and developing a global network of Living Labs (LL) as a progression to foster innovation and strengthen collaborative planning for wetland forest research, education and management.

“The project team comprises members from Tropi, University of Helsinki, Finland and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany.

“This partnership will further the Research and Development (R&D) work of Tropi and remain at the forefront of research on environmental sustainability,” Abang Johari said during the AsiaFlux Conference 2022 Gala Dinner held at TROPI last night.

In regards to R&D, Abang Johari said R&D efforts can never end and learning develops over time.

“For the benefit of humanity, conference like AsiaFlux 2022 keep strengthening and expanding your connections with people in other national and worldwide societies in promoting research for environmental sustainability.

“I must say, science, really is a beauty and I hope that this conference will generate and plant new insights to help address global challenges,” he added.

He believed that AsiaFlux Conference 2022 will raise awareness among the public, businesses, and governments on the severe effects of greenhouse gas emissions on the global environment and the vital importance of implementing appropriate regional sustainable land use policies aligned with environmental sustainability.

“I can confidently assure you that the work presented, shared and discussed at this conference, the work you do for advancing science sets a vital foundation not just for all of us but for our future generation,” he said.

The conference Is co-organized by Tropi, the Malaysian Peat Society (MPS) and the AsiaFlux Steering Committee, in collaboration with the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), Hokkaido Univeristy, Japan, Malaysia Palm Oil Board (MPOB), Forest Research Insitute Malaysia (FRIM) and Malaysia Agriculture Research and Development Institute (MARDI), supported by the Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB).

Among those present were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan; Modernisation of Agriculture and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi, Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk John Sikie; Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Deputy Minister Datuk Len Talif Salleh; Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Francis Harden Hollis and Ta Ann Holdings Berhad Executive Chairman Datuk Amar Abdul Hamed Sepawi and other distinguished guests.
