Sarawak is the second top CPO producing state

KUCHING: Sarawak was the No 2 top producing state of crude palm oil (CPO) in Malaysia in 2022, recording total output of 4,005,425 tonnes against 3,907,820 tonnes in 2021.

Year-on-year, Sarawak’s CPO production volume rose by 97,605 tonnes or about 2.5 per cent.

In the final month of December, Sarawak recorded CPO volume of 357,365 tonnes, down from 374,859 tonnes in the previous month of November, according to the monthly production data released by Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB)  yesterday.

At end-2021, Sarawak had total oil palm planted area of 1,606,261 hectares, accounting for 28 percent of the country’s total planted area. The 2022 figures are not available yet.

In 2022, Sabah led as the country’s top CPO producer, with output of 4,286,665 tonnes. This was, however, a drop from 4,361,537 tonnes in 2021 or decrease of 74,872 tonnes.

Last year, the Sarawak-Sabah combined CPO production volume was 8,292,090 tonnes, an improvement from 8,269,357 tonnes in 2021.

In Peninsular Malaysia, the top CPO producer was Pahang, with reported volume of 3,013,127 tonnes (2021:2,795,769 tonnes), followed by Johore’s 2,969,525 tonnes (2,851,495 tonnes) and Perak’s 1,866,423 tonnes (1,902,382 tonnes).

Also producing CPO were Kedah, Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan, Selangor and Terengganu.

The total CPO production in the peninsula in 2022 was higher at 10,161,350 tonnes (9,846,997 tonnes).

Nationwide, Malaysia reported CPO production volume of 18,453,440 tonnes in 2022 (18,116,354 tonnes) or an increase of 337,086 tonnes.

On CPO exports in 2022, Malaysia shipped out about 3.71 million tonnes while the export of processed palm oil (PPO) was more than 12 million tonnes. Total export of palm oil in 2022 was 15.73 million tonnes

On CPO stocks, there was a significant increase nationwide to 1,006,650 tonnes from 819,919 tonnes or up by 186,731 tonnes or about 22.8 per cent.

Year-on-year, the CPO inventory in Sarawak climbed to 188,775 tonnes from 167,511 tonnes while in Sabah, it rose to 301,294 tonnes from 243,858 tonnes. The inventory in the peninsula leapt to 516,581 tonnes from 408,550 in 2021.

Nationwide, the processed palm oil inventory rose to 863,427 tonnes in 2022 from 780,314 tonnes in 2021.

On palm kernel production, Sarawak recorded output of 79,305 tonnes in December, bringing to total 895,022 tonnes in 2022 (2020:862,791 tonnes).

Sarawak again lost to Sabah,which led with 946,5094 tonnes (956,791 tonnes) while Johore came in third with production volume of 811,655 tonnes (778,627 tonnes).

The country’s total palm kernel production last year climbed to 4,551,142 tonnes from 4,417,719 tonnes in 2021 while its inventory grew to 158,152 tonnes from 141,444 tonnes..

In 2022, Malaysia produced 2,096,913 tonnes of palm kernel oil, an improvement from 2,049,435 tonnes in 2021.

Year-on-year, Sarawak’s palm kernel oil output was raised to 376,810 tonnes (2020:360,952 tonnes).

The top producing state last year was Selangor 486,558 tonnes (487,775 tonnes), followed by Sabah’s 438,173 tonnes (445,051 tonnes) and Johore’s 415,251 tonnes (420,655 tonnes).

In 2022, Malaysia exported 1,037,808 tonnes of palm kernel oil. In 2022,the country’s inventory for crude palm kernal oil expanded to 186,349 tonnes (2021:169,985 tonnes) while the stock for processed palm kernel oil rose to 135,096 tonnes (114,549 tonnes).

In 2022, Sarawak also produced 421,750 tonnes of palm kernel cake, and was the fourth biggest producer among states in the country.

Selangor was the top producer (543,123 tonnes), with Sabah ranked second (519,577 tonnes) and Johore (459,096 tonnes).

Last year, the country exported about RM1.67 billion worth of palm kernel cake. The country’s stocks in palm kernel cake last year rose to 253,830 tonnes from 235,758 tonnes in 2021.

The MPOB figures showed that Malaysia’s refineries  produced a total of 12.9 million tonnes of RBD palm oil in 2022 (2021:12.09 million tonnes) and 9.22 million tonnes of RBD palm olein (8.88 million tonnes) as well as 255,078 tonnes of C.P.Olein (425,177 tonnes).

Last year, the country exported about 2.73 million tonnes of olechemicals and 4,380 tonnes of biodiesel.
