KUCHING: 321 mosques and suraus in Kuching yesterday received contributions from the Sarawak Islamic Council.
The presentation ceremony at Dewan Hikmah, Petra Jaya here was witnessed by Chief Minister, Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Johari said that as the season of Ramadan was here, those who wished to give talks should consult the council first before proceeding.
“They have to get the council’s approval first in order to give talks to the Muslim community here.
“We say this because we do not want those who bring in views that can cause misunderstandings between the multi-religious communities here,” he said.
Also present yesterday was Datu Haji Misnu Taha, chairman of the Sarawak Islamic Council.
There was also a business zakat presentation by Celcom Axiata Berhad.
Meanwhile, Johari confirmed that the Barisan Nasional (BN) had a new candidate for the Betong parliamentary seat in view of the upcoming General Election.
However, he did not reveal who the person was.
Johari added that Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who is the current Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, would not stand as BN’s candidate for the seat.
“He plans to step down from his parliamentary seat as he wants to serve at the state-level. This is our understanding,” he said.
Johari also said the same thing about Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom, who is currently the MP for Saratok.
Uggah and Mawan are currently the State Assemblymen for Bukit Saban and Pakan respectively.
