MIRI: The Sarawak men’s karate squad clinched a bronze medal in the team kumite event, concluding the karate competition for Sukma 2024 on a high note.
The Sarawak team, represented by Donovan Raphael, Ethan Iskandar Mohamat and Hayden Peri Harem, faced off against Perak in the race for the bronze medal.
The bout took place today (Aug 19) at the IKBN Miri hall.
Perak’s team comprised Muhammad Aneeq Shazwan Shardee, Raaj Deevar Visvenathan and Saravanaa Ramesh.
Despite a strong challenge, Sarawak’s trio managed to secure the win, adding another medal to the state’s overall tally in the Games.
Meanwhile, Sarawak karate coach Jarvis Julian expressed his immense satisfaction with the team’s overall performance, particularly in the men’s kumite category.
“Today’s performance, especially in the men’s kumite category, was really impressive. This is the first time the Sarawak karate team has won a medal since I’ve been coaching.”
Despite initial setbacks, including missing out on a medal on the first day, the team made a strong comeback.
“The first day was a bit disappointing because we missed one medal. But on the second day, we rose to the occasion, securing one gold and two bronze medals. By the third day, we added another bronze to our tally,” Jarvis explained.
He noted that the team’s achievements exceeded their initial expectations.
“We only targeted two silver and five bronze medals according to the MSN’s (National Sports Council) projections. Although we missed the silver, we managed to bring home a gold, which is a historic achievement for us.”
The Sarawak karate team’s performance at this year’s Games has been a source of pride and joy, with Jarvis praising the athletes for their dedication and resilience.
“History has been made,” he declared, celebrating the team’s unexpected success.
