Sarawak keeps top spot as CPO producer

KUCHING: Sarawak has for the second consecutive month maintained its position as the No 1 producer of crude palm oil (CPO) among states in Malaysia, with output of 329,664 tonnes in June 2022 (June 2021:327,423 tonnes).

In May, Sarawak recorded CPO production of 325,899 tonnes.

For the first six months of 2022 (6M2022), Sarawak CPO output totalled 1,726,998 tonnes, which was lower than 1,811,133 tonnes in 6M2021, according to data from Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) released yesterday.

Last month, Sabah ranked second in CPO production of 325,634 tonnes, which was an improvement from 313,148 tonnes in May 2022. However, Sabah was the top CPO producer in 6M2022, with volume of 1,899,607 tonnes (6M2021: 1,933,591 tonnes).

During first half of 2022, the combined Sarawak-Sabah CPO production was 3,626,605 tonnes (6M2021:3,744,724 tonnes) as compared to the combined production of 4,643,858 tonnes of states in Peninsular Malaysia (4,619,285 tonnes).

In the peninsula, the top producing state last month was Johor (263,317 tonnes), followed by Pahang (254,646 tonnes) and Perak (171,170 tonnes).

Nationwide, Malaysia recorded CPO output of 1,545,129 tonnes in June 2022 (May 2022:1,461,032 tonnes). In 6M2022, the country’s total CPO output was 8,270,463 tonnes, which was lower as compared to 8,364,009 tonnes in the same period in 2021.

The MPOB figures showed that there was a sharp drop in the country’s CPO export in June to 223,497 tonnes worth RM1.5 billion, down from 400,639 tonnes valued at RM2.72 billion in May 2022. Month-on-month, the country’s export of processed palm oil (PPO) was down to 970,364 tonnes (RM6798 billion), a drop from 975,778 tonnes (RM6.793 billion).

In 6M2022, Malaysia exported about 1.66 million tonnes of CPO valued at RM10 billion and 5.53 million tonnes of PPO worth RM34.6 billion.

On CPO stocks, the MPOB data showed that there was a big jump to 881,299 tonnes for the country in June, an increase of 51,384 tonnes from 829,915 tonnes in the previous month. In 6M2022, the country’s CPO inventory rose to 821,969 tonnes from 744,809 tonnes in 6M2021.

Month-on-month, all the regions recorded higher CPO inventories. Sarawak’s monthly closing stock jumped to 155,573 tonnes (May: 146,490 tonnes), Sabah 250,174 tonnes (211,622 tonnes) and Peninsular Malaysia 475,552 tonnes (471,803 tonnes).

On palm kernel, Malaysia’s production volume last month was 378,418 tonnes (May 2022: 354,912 tonnes), bringing total output in 6M2022 to about 2.051 million tonnes (6M2021: 2.05 million tonnes). The monthly closing stock of palm kernel in the country fell slightly to 152,593 tonnes last month from 153,481 tonnes in May.

Last month, Sarawak increased its palm kernel production to 72,313 tonnes (May 2022: 71,210 tonnes) and was the top producing state in the country. Johor came in second with output of 70,622 tonnes (63,826 tonnes) and Sabah finished third with 69,801 tonnes (69,107 tonnes).

The MPOB data revealed that the country recorded lower crude palm kernel oil (CPKO) production of 175,731 tonnes in June (May 2022: 158,408 tonnes). The top producing state is Selangor (41,303 tonnes), followed by Johor (39,025 tonnes), Sabah (32,694 tonnes) and Sarawak (28,795 tonnes). In 6M2022, the country produced 942,742 tonnes of CPKO, which was lower than 949,335 tonnes in 6M2021.

In June 2022, Malaysia exported 24,442 tonnes of CPKO worth RM211 million, an improvement from 19,650 tonnes valued at RM186.7 million in the previous month. Month-on-month, exports of processed palm kernel oil climbed to 67,688 tonnes (RM674.2 million) from 61,707 tonnes (RM649.4 million).

On palm kernel cake, the country’s production last month amounted to 200,096 tonnes ,down from 212,573 tonnes in May 2022. Again, Selangor led all states with volume of 46,281 tonnes, with Johor coming in second (43,372 tonnes) and Sabah finished third (41,177 tonnes) while Sarawak recorded 32,316 tonnes. Last month, the country exported 144,695 tonnes of palm kernel cake and brought in foreign exchange of RM140.1 million.

In June 2022, Malaysia earned RM2.04 billion from the exports of 210,924 tonnes of oleochemicals but this was lower as compared to about RM2.23 billion (216,816 tonnes ) in May. In 6M2022, the country raked in RM12.49 billion in the exports of about 1.373 million tonnes of oleochemicals.

On biodiesel, the MPOB figures showed that the country exported 23,689 tonnes (RM170.3 million) last month, plunging from 46,345 tonnes (RM316.7 million) in May. In 6M2022, Malaysia has earned about RM1.23 billion from the exports of 184,352 tonnes of biodiesel.
