KUCHING: The Department of Youth and Sports has introduced the Fit Malaysia programme as a means to enhance the sports culture within the local community.
State director Lamat Nyalau shared that this initiative was prompted by a study revealing that the sports culture index among Sarawak’s community remains at a moderate level. In a bid to heighten sports awareness, efforts are being made to elevate the sports culture index to be on par with other developed nations in Asia and around the world.
“We will implement the ‘Fit Malaysia’ programme across all states in Malaysia as part of an economic initiative under the Ministry of Youth and Sports. At the state level, the programme will take place on Sept 9 at the Sarawak Youth and Sports Complex,” he said on Wednesday (Aug 16).
Lamat added that Fit Malaysia is among the programmes designed to encourage greater community engagement in the realm of sports.
“The programme’s name was chosen to highlight the concept of holistic wellbeing, encompassing economic, spiritual, social, and physical health.”
The programme will feature various activities with a focus on events such as the 30km Fun Ride, 10km Fun Ride, 5km Fun Run, and 3km Family Walk.
Additionally, a range of engaging activities and competitions, including Jump Rope Performance, Aerobicton Performance, Mass Aerobics, Jump Rope Competition (Team and Individual categories), Aerobathon (Team category), Strong Fit (Team category), Arm Wrestling (three categories), Fitness Clinic, Fitness Challenge (Team category), Fitness Explorace (Team category), Basketball 3 on 3 (Team category), and more, will take place.
The Sarawak Zone Women Sports Challenge will also be held concurrently, engaging around 500 participants in women’s sports events such as volleyball, netball, and handball.
“We are targeting around 7,000 participants from the community for the programme,” Lamat added.
