SARATOK: “Sarawak Maju Makmur” has been selected as the official theme for this year’s Saratok Aidilfitri Arch Decoration Competition, says Kalaka assemblyman Mohamad Duri.
He noted that the Aidilfitri celebration here would be incomplete without this mandatory event, which has been held since 1998.
For over 26 years, adorning and colouring the main roads in villages on the eve of Aidilfitri has been a tradition in Saratok.
“We are proud to continue this popular competition this year because it has become a tradition. I acknowledge that this competition has evolved over the past 26 years…from using kerosene lamps, then electric lights, and now I believe it’s more modern,” he told the media yesterday.
He clarified that many believe this annual traditional event should be maintained and continued in the future so that the younger generation understands the significance of past Aidilfitri celebrations.
This year’s organisation is jointly conducted by the Kalaka Assembly Service Centre and the Saratok Islamic Welfare Trust (LAKIS).
“We provide generous prizes, namely RM3,000 and a trophy for the champion. The runner-up will receive RM2,300 and a trophy, while the third-place winner will receive RM1,500 and a trophy.
“Fourth and fifth places will each receive RM1,000 and RM800, respectively. Additionally, each participating team will receive a consolation prize of RM500.
“Therefore, I hope more groups will participate to make this year’s Aidilfitri festivities more vibrant,” Mohamad said, adding that participation is open to all villages or housing estates in the Kalaka constituency.
Interested individuals can complete and return the participation form to the secretariat Gapor Ahmad (019-8449021) or Ajis Nyasar (019-8179255) no later than April 5.
In addition to the competition, various activities to enliven Ramadan are being organised, including the distribution of porridge and more.
“Almost all mosques and surau have been allocated financial provisions for their respective management committees to organise activities,” Mohamad added.
