KUCHING: The Sarawak Master Builders Federation (SMBF) has welcomed the Sarawak government’s initiative to implement the Labour Recalibration Programme (RTK) 2.0, which aims to regularise existing undocumented foreign workers.

Chairman James Ha Tung Ing expressed his hope that this initiative would lead to a true solution in collaboration with the Immigration Department and Labour Department, effectively addressing all concerns under the state’s purview.

“We would like to see officers at the Immigration Department and Labour Department well briefed and authorised to process applications online promptly.

“Approval with ease and a hassle-free application process is critical for the successful implementation of this initiative,” Ha told New Sarawak Tribune.

Ha’s comments on Thursday (July 27) come after the announcement of RTK 2.0, which will be effective from July 26 to Dec 31 this year, by Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring), Datuk Gerawat Gala.

He added that employers will not face punitive action or back-dated charges for coming forward to legalise undocumented foreign workers. To alleviate employers’ concerns about coming forward, assurances from relevant authorities are needed.

“We have high expectations that this initiative will lead to a more sustainable and legally compliant workforce for our industry, fostering a global community spirit and promoting humanity for Sarawak and its neighbouring countries, where the foreign workers belong,” said Ha.
