KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak may be the host state for the South East Asian (SEA) Games in 2027.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said Sarawak is currently making all the necessary preparations in terms of sports facilities to cater to such international sports events.
“We have been requested to be prepared, maybe in 2026 or 2027, we are asked by the Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia to be host for the 2027 SEA Games.
“Which is why, at the moment, we are preparing the facilities for us to hold international level sports events,” he said.
He said this during the townhall session in conjunction with the Lan Berambeh Anak Sarawak 2023 programme held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) on yesterday (Oct 21).
Abang Johari said Sarawak is setting up a Sports Village modelled after New Zealand’s sports village.
In this context he said New Zealand despite having a small population has done well in the Olympics.
“As such, we learn from them, and Sarawak will provide special allocations to develop this Sports Village,” he said.
He added that another facilities being built near the Sarawak Stadium is a velodrome, an arena for track cycling.
