KUCHING: The Sarawak men’s softball team put up a strong fight in their opening match against Johor in the SUKMA games this morning, though they narrowly lost by a single point, with a final score of 8-9.
Despite the loss, Sarawak showed their strength, particularly during the fourth inning, where they managed to secure the most runs.
Coach Aaron Abel Donald remained optimistic after the game, praising his players for their efforts.
“Our boys did their best; they performed very well. It was just a slight mistake that made the difference. But this is only the first game, and we are still in the fight,” Donald said when met after the match.
“Our next game will be tomorrow (Friday) at 2 pm against Selangor. We hope more supporters will come to cheer us on, as this is our home ground. We will fight to the end,” he said.
Aaron stressed that the team’s goal remains unchanged.
“Our target has always been to proceed to the next round, then to reach the top four, and ultimately, to aim for the gold medal. This has always been our mission, as we have communicated to our chef de mission.
“So we are still fighting for it. If we can win the next two matches, we will advance to the second stage, either the page system or the semi-finals. From there, we will fight for a place in the final,” Aaron said.
Sarawak’s next match against Selangor is anticipated to be a crucial one as they seek to secure a spot in the next stage of the competition.
