KUCHING: A local company, Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd, will be among the front runners in the sale of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in South East Asia, said Sarawak Economic Corporation Development (SEDC) chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Husain.
A sole agency agreement for the sale of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles was signed between Sarawak Metro and Foshan Feichi Automobile Manufacture (China) yesterday at Menara SEDC.
At the signing ceremony, Sarawak Metro represented by SEDC general manager Abdul Hadi Abdul Kadir while Feichi was represented by its general manager Jiang Young.
The signing of agreement was witnessed by Transport Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin, Abdul Aziz and Feichi’s overseas marketing director Kingsley Chou.
Abdul Aziz, in his speech, said the ceremony was a milestone for SEDC, particularly its wholly-owned subsidiary.
“This will give us the opportunity to lead the hydrogen fuel cell vehicles initiatives in the region.
“This agency agreement is for a period of two years and can be extended upon agreement by both parties,” he explained.
He said SEDC’s strategic partner, Feichi was keen to appoint Sarawak Metro as their sole agent in the region and for it to become its long term business partner in expanding the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle industry in South East Asia.
“SEDC is truly honoured by its (Feichi) trust and commitment as this shows its confidence in the growth of hydrogen fuel cell vehicle in the region,” he added.
Abdul Aziz pointed out that Feichi was among the leading hydrogen fuel cell vehicle manufacturers in China and presently in Foshan City alone, there were 150 hydrogen fuel cell buses operating on the road and serving the general public there.
Because of this, manufacturers in China were keen to learn from Feichi the advantages of using hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.
Abdul Aziz added, “In the Asean region, heavy-duty vehicles are responsible for a large share of black-carbon emissions.
“With their high fuel consumption and large carbon emission, these vehicles are attractive targets to be powered by our green, zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell technology.”
