KUCHING: Sarawak is exploring the possibility of adopting cogeneration technology as a green energy source in the state.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said during his recent work visit to Bangkok, Thailand, he had learnt that there is a new technology known as cogeneration which involves a mix of renewable and non-renewable energy sources.
“It appears that there is a new technology for generating energy. They called it cogeneration. Co-generation means the mixture of renewable and non-renewable sources.
“Previously, we would use coal (to produce energy). Now, the coal can be mixed with biomass to produce green energy.
“This technology may require about 60 percent renewable energy and 40 percent coal,” he explained.
He said this to reporters after witnessing the presentation of the Malaysian Book of Records (MBOR) certificate for the most participants wearing ethnic attire in a choreographed dance held at the Kuching Waterfront on Sunday.
Abang Johari, who is also the Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability, further said cogeneration technology, which combines biomass with coal, can reduce gas emissions due to the dilution process involved.
“The power turbine mechanism I saw in Bangkok is different,” he said.
When asked whether Sarawak would adopt the new technology, Abang Johari responded, “We will see first.”
