BERGEN: The state government is exploring procedures to tax carbon producers, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
According to a TVS news report, Abang Johari said the move is in line with the action of the United Nations (UN) which has listed carbon as a commodity.
“I think the UN has categorised carbon as a commodity. So, it will be the same as the other commodities that we have managed.
“Carbon has become a commodity to be traded and as a government we are exploring how to tax them (carbon producers),” he said at a dinner organised by Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) at Hotel Norge, Norway, yesterday (Aug 23).
He said he had obtained more in-depth information on the handling of carbon to be used as a trading material through his work visit to Norway.
Abang Johari, who is currently leading a delegation to Norway, had a technical visit to the CCS facility, Northern Lights and Technology Centre Mongstad to study the infrastructure and technology used by CCS industry players.
