KUCHING: The Sarawak government may consider setting up a trade office in Thailand in the future if trade volume increases.
“It depends on the volume of business — if Thailand puts an office here, then we may reciprocate,” said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg. He admitted that for now it is too premature for a trade office in Thailand.
However, during the event he did urge for networking and collaborative efforts between Thailand and Sarawak, which he believed would bring mutual benefits to both parties. He also mentioned the recently established trade office in Singapore, adding that the next one would be in Pontianak followed by Brunei.
When asked about the timeline of the two upcoming trade offices, he remarked that the Pontianak trade office was already in negotiation and should be up and running within two years’ time. “Brunei — also within these two years,” the chief minister stated.
