MIRI: A total of 198 longhouse dwellers have received free eye health checks with spectacles given to those in need, thanks to Sarawak Oil Palms (SOP) Berhad.

Its Vision Care Project at TR. Justine Manai’s longhouse was carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Health with the help of Pejabat Kesihatan Bahagian Miri, Klinik Kesihatan Tun Haji Openg, Klinik Kesihatan Ladang 3, and Spec Shop Sdn Bhd.

The project that commenced in 2013 is a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative aimed at reaching out to longhouses surrounding the vicinity of the group’s operations.

“It aims to create awareness about healthy and quality living and also lower the risk of preventable blindness, particularly among children and elderly folk in longhouses who often do not have the necessary means to obtain immediate access to medical facilities,” it said in a statement.

TR Justine Manai thanked SOP for choosing Sg. Entulang for the said project.

“The generosity of SOP for absorbing all costs for the eye screening programme as well as sponsoring spectacles for the residents is very much appreciated,” he said.

In September, SOP conducted the same project at Batu Lintang, Sri Aman involving 23 longhouses as well as at Long Bedian.
