SINGAPORE: Sarawak is currently working towards becoming the global leader in the green hydrogen market, extending beyond ASEAN and the Asia Pacific region.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state is continuously advancing its clean energy by exploring technologies like Hybrid Solar-Wind and Solar Hydro Projects.
“These innovations complement our hydropower expansion and are pivotal in reducing carbon emissions across various sectors.
“Together with our renewable energy initiatives, these hybrids underscore our unwavering commitment to sustainable energy development and a low-carbon future,” he said.
He was delivering a keynote address at the Asia Pacific Petroleum Conference (APPEC) 2024 in Singapore on today (September 9).
Abang Johari also said that Sarawak was expanding its green methanol production.
“The Sarawak Methanol Complex was launched in July of this year, marking our entry as a leading global methanol producer with an annual capacity of 1.75 million metric tonnes.
“We (the state government) are also focusing on downstream ammonia production for urea fertiliser, which is crucial for soil fertility and food security, while supporting local employment through our expanding industrial efforts,” he added.
Abang Johari stated that beside hydrogen, the state government was also advancing the commercial production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from microalgae, solidifying its role in providing sustainable energy solutions across multiple sectors.
“At the World Hydrogen Summit in Rotterdam, I emphasised the importance of preserving our environment while leveraging hydrogen to reduce carbon emissions.
“Collaboration between businesses and government is essential, with governments updating legislation and the private sector advancing technology to meet the evolving needs of the industry,” he stated.
The APPEC 2024 conference, organised by S&P Global Commodity Insights, focused on the theme “Fueling Tomorrow’s Possibilities Together,” highlighting the importance of collaboration and innovation to address challenges such as climate change, drive progress and promote sustainability.
State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki was among distinguished guests present at the conference.
