KUCHING: Coffee enthusiasts in the city will have the rare opportunity to be part of the inaugural Borneo Coffee Symposium right at your door step on April 6 and 7 at the Kuching Old Courthouse here.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah said with this truly unique event held at an equally historic venue, the symposium has the immense potential to catapult Sarawak as the premier destination for coffee research and cultivation.

“Sarawak’s coffee beans has big potential, and with the symposium held here it can help to further develop the state’s coffee industry,” he said in a press conference on the Borneo Coffee Symposium at Earthlings Coffee Workshop HQ, Taman Supreme, yesterday.

Uggah who is also the Modernisation of Agriculture, Native Land and Regional Development Minister, stated it is hoped through the symposium, more understanding on how to develop coffee plantation in Sarawak will be achieved.

“We are very thankful to Earthlings Coffee Workshop and its team for bringing this symposium to Kuching,” he said.

The symposium is organised by Earthlings Coffee Workshop together with the Malaysia Coffeeology Collective, which is supported by the Sarawak Government, Department of Agriculture Sarawak, Sarawak Convention Bureau, and Coffee Consulate.

The symposium will see the congregation of coffee experts, renowned coffee scientists, experienced coffee farmers, coffee estate owners, and researchers from countries such as Germany, the Philippines, Taiwan, India, Switzerland, Thailand, Canada, United Kingdom (UK), El Salvador and Malaysia.

There will be going to be forums where the coffee experts will share and discuss the challenges and potentials of cultivating high quality lowland coffees.

Meanwhile, chairperson of Borneo Coffee Symposium and managing director of Earthlings Coffee Workshop Dr Kenny Lee said about 250 locals and internationals are expected to attend the symposium.

There will also be side events held on those two days such as the first Liberica Roasting Competition, and a Mini Coffee Fair.
