KUCHING: Sarawak Weightlifting Association president Gerald Rentap Jabu said the Sarawak Open Weightlifting Championship will be held in September but the dates have not been fixed.

Weightlifters from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Brunei, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia will be invited to participate in the tournament.

Rentap, who is also Layar State Assemblyman said the purpose of the tournament was  to popularise weightlifting and to give weightlifters  the opportunity to flex their muscles.

“The championship will uplift the status of weightlifting in Sarawak,” he told Bernama, here yesterday.

He would also ensure that Sarawak has a representative in each category of the weightlifting events to be contested at the 2018 Perak Sukma (Malaysia Games)  in Ipoh.

Meanwhile, Sarawak State Sports Council director Dr Ong Kong Swee said the state has seven weightlifting training centres in major towns and schools.

“We are also working to increase the number of coaches and are confident of hiring them before 2018 Perak Sukma,” he added.
