JUDICIAL REVIEW ON SARAWAK VS PETRONAS CASE
KUCHING: Members of the state Pakatan Harapan (PH) have put politics aside and showed up yesterday at the High Court here in solidarity with the state government on the first day of a judicial review (filed by Petronas) on the state government’s imposition of the State Sales Tax (SST).
Among them were Sarawak Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) vice chairman and also Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How, Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii, and Padungan assemblyman, Wong King Wei.
See said they went to the court to show their solidarity with all Sarawakians who were united on the matter.
“I have confidence in our legal team headed by Datuk Seri JC Fong (State Legal Counsel) and Datuk Talat Mahmood Abdul Rashid (Sarawak Attorney-General).
“They are some of the best legal minds that we have in Sarawak. So, we have full confidence that they will carry the matter through, and have good arguments to win the case,” he told reporters at the court yesterday.
See said it was a very important case because the matter had been delayed and talked about for so many years.
“I think it is good that we have some finality. Of course, we are very hopeful of getting everything we need for Sarawak. That is important.
“All that we have under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) … how the nation comes about, that is what we want for Sarawak,” he said.
Meanwhile, Dr Yii said from the beginning, the Democratic Action Party (DAP) had always stated its support for anything beneficial for Sarawak.
“I am happy that we have this opportunity to ascertain legal authority or legal certainty on an issue that has been dragged on, debated, and discussed in public forums,” he said, adding that while discussion was good, what had been said in public was not legally binding.
Hence, the judicial review is good for resolving the issues so that Sarawak can get what rightfully belongs to it as stipulated in MA63 and the Federal Constitution.
“We are in solidarity with the state government on things that are in the interest of Sarawak,” said Dr Yii.
