KUCHING: Sarawak Police Contingent (IPK Sarawak) received 27 new police patrol cars on Thursday.

State Police Commisioner Datuk Aidi Ismail received the vehicles from a representative of car leasing concessionaire, Spanco Sdn Bhd at a ceremony held at Sarawak Police Headquarters here.

The new patrol cars will be distributed to police contingents in Kuching (five units) while Sibu, Miri and Padawan will each receive four units, Bintulu, Kota Samarahan and Limbang –two units each, and one each for Sarikei and Sri Aman. Two of the cars will be used by the Tourist Police Unit.

The MPVs are equipped with support equipment such as RMPNET communication equipment, dash cam and mobile digital video recorder.

Aidi said in efforts to improve their community services, logistics such as multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) cars were essential, especially in the enforcement of crime prevention patrols.

“The patrol car unit serves as the frontliner – the ‘first responder’ of the PDRM and to handle incidents reported to the police through the control centre, before the investigation team arrives.

“The unit also acts as a key driver in crime prevention,” he said during the handover ceremony.

He hoped that with the new assets, the police patrol team would be able to respond promptly to emergency calls from the community and thus increase public confidence in the police.

“MPV members who serve as the front line must take advantage of this facility to continue to provide the best service to the community,” he said.

Aidi said for rural districts, the police were still waiting for acquisition of  four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicles.

“For the interior, 4WD vehicles are more suitable and we are still waiting for the procurement,” he said.

Also present during the ceremony were deputy chief of Crime Prevention and Community Safety Sarawak ACP V. Raja R. Vadivelu and a representative of Spanco Sdn Bhd Sarawak Herwan Sairon.
