KUCHING: Sarawak police will conduct a statewide operation codenamed ‘Op Selamat’ starting Thursday (Apr 20) to reduce accidents and ensure peace and security in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.

The 20th operation, which will run for eight days until Apr 27, will involve a total of 750 police officers and members from various departments and branches from the Sarawak contingent police headquarters (IPK).

Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said the operation is aimed at reducing accidents throughout the state, enforcing traffic laws and regulations, creating a sense of comfort and safety among road users, and preventing house-trespass.

“Our police officers and members will be assigned to 56 identified accident-prone hotspots throughout Sarawak, to increase patrols and ensure that the traffic flow is smooth without any misfortunate incidents.

“The operation will focus on federal, state and town roads, especially in areas where accidents and traffic jams often occur, as well as residential areas and neighbourhoods.

“In addition, the police will also focus on preventing house-trespass by making periodic patrols to ensure that the premises and houses are safe from crime,” he told reporters here today.

Azman advised road users to obey the traffic rules throughout the festive season.

Strict action can be taken against any road user found to be violating and not complying with the traffic rules.

He also reminded the public to inform the police when leaving their homes during the festive period.

The public can provide information to the police by filling in the ‘Borang balik kampung’, which can be obtained from the nearest police station, or downloaded from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) portal – https://www.rmp.gov.my/.

The form can also be obtained from the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP) application – available in the Google Play Store and Apps Store.
