KUCHING: A total of 5,501 personnel, along with comprehensive logistical support spanning land, air, and river, are prepared for the upcoming northeast monsoon transition in Sarawak.
Deputy Premier and Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said that this includes various disaster response agencies, such as the Royal Malaysia Police, Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), and Malaysia Civil Defence (APM).
This move follows the advisory from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) regarding the monsoon transition phase, which began on September 19.
“SDMC is prepared, from our human resources and logistical assets to food assistance, to address any potential heavy rainfall and flooding due to the monsoon transition phase in Sarawak.
“The disaster response agencies will also utilise 487 land assets, 249 river assets, 12 air assets, and 207 support assets.
“All are fully prepared to tackle the challenges of the monsoon season,” Uggah said in a statement today.
He further added that the Social Welfare Department has ensured adequate disaster relief supplies at storage depots, office depots, and forward bases.
“Additionally, there are 627 temporary evacuation centres ready, with the capacity to accommodate up to 162,091 disaster victims, and they are open and ready for use whenever required.
“I urge everyone to remain vigilant during this monsoon season and to stay updated with weather forecasts and alerts released by METMalaysia,” he said.
