KUCHING: Sarawak has recorded 27 fatal accidents in the workplace between January and October this year.
Department of Occupational Safety and Health (Dosh) deputy director-general (Occupational Safety), Zailee Dollah, said the fatal accidents covered all sectors of the workforce except military personnel and those who worked on board ships.
He added that there were four workplace accidents recorded in the state’s public service sector.
Meanwhile, there were 23 cases of illnesses and poisoning in the workplace compared to 13 cases during the same period last year.
Such cases usually caused hearing loss, skin diseases and tuberculosis, he said after opening the 2019 Occupational Safety and Health Seminar for the Public Sector in Sarawak, here yesterday.
Last year, the state recorded a total of 47 fatal accidents at the workplace.
Meanwhile, Dosh had investigated 229 workplace accidents in the public service sector nationwide between 2014 and 2018, of which 24 cases were fatal.
The seminar was attended by 250 federal and state representatives from all over Sarawak, aimed at exposing civil servants to the importance of occupational safety and health. – Bernama
