KUCHING: The trend of open burning in Sarawak has become a significant concern as the number of cases has risen sharply recently.
Acting Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) director Tiong Ling Hii said that they have recorded a total of 68 cases, affecting an area of 59.066 hectares, from Monday (July 22) to Saturday (July 27).
“The department had recorded 28 cases on Saturday, marking the highest number of cases over the six-day period.
“This is worrying as it is an increase of 87 per cent compared to the 15 cases recorded the previous day (Friday),” he said.
He stressed that open fires can be prevented if the public cooperate by stopping all forms of open burning activities during this hot and dry weather period.
Most of the cases are intentional, not only for agricultural purposes but also for burning wood waste, paper, or trash. The fires often spread when they got out of control.
Tiong stated that the department will increase patrols, including with 58 Volunteer Fire Brigades throughout Sarawak, to ensure that incidents of open burning are dealt with quickly.
