KUCHING: Sarawak recorded 717 Covid-19 positive cases today (April 23), the second highest in the country after Selangor (748), bringing the state’s tally to 26,749.
The new cases also took the total number of infections in the country to 387,535 since the pandemic began.
This is the second time cases in Sarawak have exceeded the 700-mark, with the highest being 960 cases recorded on April 16.
Of the total positive cases, Sibu district reported 165 cases, Bintulu (162), Kuching (57), Saratok (45), Meradong (44), Miri (40), Subis (38), Kapit (31), Bukit Mabong (28), Serian and Mukah — 27 each, Selangau (15), Sarikei, Kanowit and Matu — five each, Kabong, Daro, Sri Aman and Beluru — three each, Samarahan, Pusa, Lundu, Julau and Lubok Antu — two each, while Bau recorded one case.
Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) in a statement today (April 23) said 624 out of 717 cases were individuals who had been instructed to undergo quarantine at designated places.
In short, 444 new cases were screened after having contact to positive cases, 179 were individuals linked to active clusters, 49 detected from other screenings in health facilities, 44 from screening of symptomatic individuals, and one import B case involving an individual returning from other states.
On the same day, Sarawak also reported that 579 patients had recovered and were discharged from hospitals statewide, bringing the total number of recovered and discharged cases to 20,776 or 77.67 percent.
It added that there were 5,759 individuals still undergoing treatment at hospital isolation wards in the state.
“Today (Friday), 724 new person-under-investigation (PUI) cases have been reported and seven are still awaiting laboratory results,” it said.
