MIRI: Sarawak’s sailing gold medallists have credited their success at SUKMA 2024 to the strong team chemistry they developed over a short period of time.

Nurul Shazwanie Mohd Saad and Nur Asma Syahrizan, who clinched gold in the International 420 women’s category, admitted that their victory was a pleasant surprise, considering they had only trained together for three months.

“Building our team chemistry was a major challenge since we were often in different locations

“However, as we trained together, we got to know each other better and overcame those challenges. Alhamdulillah, we managed to pull it off,” they both shared with reporters at Marina Bay after the medal presentations on Saturday (Aug 24).

The pair began training in May, with their biggest hurdle being synchronizing their movements and communication on the water.

“The hardest part is working together on the boat and communicating effectively. It’s not easy to address and adapt to each other’s differences,” they explained.

Similarly, in the International 420 men’s category, gold medallists Syahzharoul Aiman Rozaiman and Muhammad Amirul Aqmal Aslan faced their own set of challenges.

“The conditions at sea are harsh, and the weather can be unpredictable. The key was refining our chemistry on the boat,” Muhammad Amirul said.

Having competed together in several sailing events since last year, the duo stressed the importance of continuous improvement in their partnership.

Syahzharoul Aiman also encouraged sailing enthusiasts to experience the sport firsthand at Marina Bay.

Looking ahead, Muhammad Amirul expressed hopes for Sarawak to develop a new generation of talented sailors for future SUKMA competitions.

“We need to scout and nurture young sailing talents. Work hard and aim high for the next SUKMA,” he urged.
